| In Victorian times play was forbidden on the Sabbath, so many times Noah's Ark was a special "Sunday Toy". It became a very popular toy and was imported to the United States from Erzgebirge, Germany. That is where the ring-turned lathe process was invented. This process is still being used today. First a lathed ring with precise small grooves and indentations is produced. Then slices are cut from this ring. Each of these slices is then carved into animals particular to the ring. Today the lathes are powered by electricity rather than by water wheels, but the figures have lost none of their traditional charm. All of the figures in the ark we are showing are cut, carved and hand-painted by Christian Werner, a member of a family of craftsmen working in wood. He is one of the few people who is a master of the craft . The ark is 8 1/2 inches long, 3 1/2 inches wide and 5 1/2 inches tall. There are 18 sets of animals with the ark. | ||||||
